Explanation: The Shadow Witch is an ancient cryptid said to dwell in the deepest, lightless heart of the old-growth forest. She is not a witch in the human sense, though she was likely human once. Centuries of isolation, forbidden ritual, and communion with the forest's oldest, hungriest magic reshaped her into something else: part woman, part shadow, part something the darkness of the forest itself dreamed into being.
She rarely shows her full form. Most who claim to have seen her describe only fragments—a silhouette between the trees that doesn't quite move like a person, still eyes catching firelight from impossible distances, the hem of a tattered cloak dragging through the underbrush without a sound. Her skin seems to drink the light around it rather than reflect it, giving her the appearance of a woman-shaped hole cut into the world. The forest bends toward her—vines curl in her direction, everything goes silent as she passes, and the trees themselves are said to lean, ever so slightly, to keep her in shade.
Legends disagree on her origin. Some say she was a healer or midwife exiled for practicing magic too old and too dark for her village to forgive. Others claim she made a pact with the forest itself in a moment of desperation, trading her humanity for power and permanence. What all the stories agree on is this: she does not leave the woods, and the woods do not want her to leave.
Those who wander too far from the marked trails report a creeping disorientation, as though the forest is rearranging itself behind them. Trails loop back on themselves. Familiar landmarks vanish.

Field Notes: Never answer if something in the woods calls your name in a voice you recognize; it isn't who you think it is. Offerings left at the forest's edge (herbs, candles, small trinkets) are sometimes enough to keep her curiosity elsewhere. Hikers who've gone missing and later stumbled back to civilization often can't account for the time they lost, or the strange charcoal-like burns on their palms. Some believe the Shadow Witch doesn't hunt for malice, but to keep the forest's borders sealed—guarding something buried far beneath the roots. Woodcutters have an old rule: never fell a tree after sundown. No one remembers why the rule started, only that it's never been broken.
