Explanation:
The Necro Wisp is a rare and horrifying ectoplasmic cryptid believed to be the product of forbidden necromancy. Unlike the gentle lights of ancient folklore that merely lead travelers astray, a Necro Wisp is a malicious soul bound to eternal servitude. It drifts silently through abandoned cemeteries, ruined battlefields, forgotten catacombs, and cursed forests, searching for the living.

Its grotesque appearance is impossible to mistake. A floating, rotting skull wrapped in writhing strands of glowing green ectoplasm. Torn flesh clings to cracked bone while rows of jagged, unnatural teeth grin endlessly beneath hollow eye sockets burning with spectral light. The creature leaves behind a faint trail of ghostly mist, carrying the unmistakable scent of damp earth, decay, and ozone.

Legends claim that Necro Wisps are created when a powerful necromancer imprisons a tortured soul inside its own decaying remains, twisting it into an obedient hunter. Over centuries, hatred and suffering erase every trace of the victim's humanity, leaving only an insatiable hunger for fear and life energy.

Victims often report hearing faint whispers calling their names before seeing a distant floating light. Those who follow rarely return unchanged or even at all. Survivors speak of overwhelming dread, unexplained memory loss, and vivid nightmares in which the grinning skull watches from the darkness.

A Necro Wisp is not simply undead—it is a cursed spirit wearing death itself as its face. It not only kills and consumes, but it also scares and tortures it's targets with psychic visions that sometimes appear as though they are part of fabric of reality.

Field Notes:

Don't chase the light.
A Necro Wisp wants you separated from everyone else before it attacks.

They are known to linger near places where innocent people suffered violent deaths.

Multiple Necro Wisps occasionally gather around mass graves, creating eerie "ghost lights" mistaken for swamp gas and ball lightning.

Ancient necromancers supposedly assigned each Necro Wisp a single purpose, to guard forbidden relics, hunt escaped souls, or punish those who trespass in cursed lands.

Unlike ordinary ghosts, destroying the skull does not necessarily destroy the Necro Wisp. If enough ectoplasm escapes, the spirit can slowly rebuild itself around another corpse.

Some occult researchers believe the green glow is not light at all, but raw necrotic energy leaking from a fractured soul.
